Passion for People
Kevin L. Hargrave was born in Salisbury, N.C.. near Charlotte, N.C. and currently resides in Enterprise, Alabama.
At a very young age, Kevin Hargrave began expressing himself artistically. Oftentimes, he would draw in the dirt at his house or on the walls of his family’s apartment; needless to say, this prompted his father to buy him paper! At around four or five years of age, Hargrave began drawing cartoons and comic book heroes and began to develop a deep passion for drawing people. This passion would carry on until he turned 15 when his father told him about an artist who had recently moved into their neighborhood.
What Hargrave saw when he visited this artist, changed his life and perspective on art. Hargrave states, “His work was so realistic, life like, nothing I had seen before. From that day forward, I decided that was the kind of artist I wanted to be.” Kevin Hargrave is a self-taught artist; honing his skills in portraiture, he has become very proficient in pencils, charcoal, and pastels and has achieved photographic quality in his work.
Unfortunately, due to an eight-year stint in the U.S. Army, his art came to a complete stop, only completing two serious pieces during that time. The year 2000 brought dramatic changes for Mr. Hargrave that led to a renewed interest in art with the encouragement of his pastors. "Today I have shifted from portrait drawing to expressing my own ideas, which portray concepts dealing with issues on a political or social nature,” says Hargrave. “My work has been exhibited in North Carolina, Alabama, and Germany and I am currently working on a series of drawings and paintings dealing with African American heritage.” |
